Renting a mini storage unit is something that people do for just a month or two or for several years. If you know that you will only be using the storage unit for a month, then it is not worth going through the process of thoroughly organizing the interior since everything will come out in a short time frame. But, you may know that you are looking for a long-term rental, which changes a lot about storage. It is beneficial to follow several tips on staying organized when you have items in storage for such a long time.

Write Descriptions on the Boxes

Once you put items into a box, it is easy to forget what it is inside them after several months. It is best to avoid making your memory do all the work by writing down descriptions on each box. You should not hesitate to get into the specifics such as when you have a box of board games, you may want to take the time to write down the names of each board game inside to avoid any confusion in the future.

Keep a Notebook Inside

An excellent way to keep documentation for your storage unit is to get a notebook and dedicate its use to the storage unit. When you put something into the unit, you should write it down in the notebook. This will make it easy to come back to the storage unit and know what it is inside without looking around. When you remove furniture or boxes, you will want to write that down in the notebook as well. While the boxes and notebook are great places to put down dates, you may want to have something at home to look at. You can create an excel spreadsheet that includes all these details. You can even write down where you put the items after you take them out of storage so that you always know where they are. It is a helpful thing to have because you will not have to go to the storage unit to gather these details.
