Stop Making Those Silly Business Mistakes

I am an absolute shopaholic. I spend a lot of time patronizing literally every type of business under the sun. As an avid consumer, I believe that I have advice that I can give businesses that can help them become more successful and serve there customers better. Even though I am the only one working on this blog, much of what I write comes from endless conversations with friends and family members who have experienced frustrations when patronizing businesses, big and small. My name is Alice Stark and I hope you enjoy the journey that we will be going on together!

The Anatomy Of A Cast Net

Business Blog

Fishing has been used as both a recreational activity and a source of food. Long before fishing poles were put into use, traditional fishermen used cast nets to catch their quarry.

Cast nets still have a place in modern fisheries. Using a cast net makes it easy to obtain live bait or to catch fish that like to swim close to the surface of the water. To understand how a cast net works, you must learn how these nets are constructed.

Mesh

Modern cast nets are made primarily of mesh. The mesh must be strong enough to hold the fish you are trying to capture, but flexible enough to be thrown with ease. A lightweight mesh is required so that your net will sink quickly to the bottom of the waterway after it has been cast.

The mesh is fashioned into individual panels that taper toward the top. These panels are sewn together to form a circle, allowing the cast net to balloon across the top of a group of fish after being thrown.

Lead Line

The lead line is another important part of any cast net. The lead line acts as an anchor. Once a net has been cast, the lead line forces it open and allows it to spread over the top of the water.

Specialized weights are attached to the lead line. These weights allow the net to sink at a rapid rate, preventing the escape of any fish that have been trapped beneath the net. You should invest in a cast net with a well-built lead line if you want the net to perform efficiently.

Braille Lines

Braille lines are designed to help form a mesh cast net into a pocket as the net is being retrieved. The braille lines run through a special pocket known as a horn. The horn is located at the center of the net where each tapered mesh panel meets.

Braille lines extend from the outer ring of the net, up each mesh panel, and through the horn. The braille lines then attach to the handline that a fisherman keeps in their possession as the cast net is thrown.

When the hand line is pulled, the braille lines tighten and draw the net inward onto itself. This creates a pocket that prevents any fish from escaping as the fisher pulls the cast net back to the boat.
